Which Grocery Store Has the Best Prices? An Investigation – Part 1

When it comes to groceries (food only, not toiletries or household products), many people have their idea of what grocery store is cheapest. With rising prices due to inflation, people are really looking closer at where they shop and what they buy because of a shrinking budget. Well, I’m here to help!

I compiled lists of grocery prices for most of the Green Bay area grocery stores. In days of yore, I had to physically go to each store and grab prices; now, it’s as easy as opening tabs on the computer. However, sometimes the online price is higher than instore prices, which I noticed at both Woodmans and Costco. Now, some stores, like Aldi and Woodman’s may have different prices based upon location, so I’m providing a list of which stores I referenced:

  • Aldi – Western Avenue, Green Bay
  • Festival Foods – De Pere
  • Hy-Vee – Ashwaubenon
  • Meijer – Howard
  • Metro Market – Lombardi Ave, Green Bay
  • Target – Ashwaubenon
  • Walmart – West Green Bay
  • Fresh Thyme – Ashwaubnon
  • Woodmans – Green Bay/Howard
  • Costco – Green Bay/Bellevue

I also shopped the lowest price possible for each item as well as healthier/organic choices. My family lies somewhere in the middle, buying a mix of lowest price items as well as some organic items as well. I picked some staples in our house, like fresh fruit and vegetables, and included ground beef, tomato sauce, and spaghetti noodles in order to price out a meal. For certain items, such as yogurt and coffee, stores like Costco have larger sizes, so I divided items by price and size, then multiplied by the most common size for the item (ex. Folgers coffee 25.9oz ground coffee.)

All of these prices were obtained between February 12 – 18, 2026. The prices reflected are the Regular Store Prices, not their sale price.

Drumroll, please! For lowest price items across the board, Aldi wins this round, with Woodmans right behind. A closer look:

This information is almost identical to the information I gathered back in 2011, with one big exception. We now have a lot more choices for groceries that we did fifteen years ago. Meijer, Costco, Hy-Vee, and Fresh Thyme have been added, as well as additional Aldi stores in the region.

Now, I also did shop for people like me who not only want to save money, but also want healthier options, like organic multigrain bread (Dave’s Killer Bread was used in most cases.) Or pasture-raised eggs. Organic yogurt, cucumbers, ground beef, chicken, and tomato sauce. And even though many people tout Woodmans large Organic section, they came in third place behind Costco and Aldi in terms of price.

Now, I don’t buy some of this stuff that’s on this list, and there are a lot of other staples that I always buy that AREN’T on the list. This is just a general list based upon questioning people in my orbit.

What do you think? Are there any surprises?

I’ll be back with further analysis next weekend!
