Many of you have discovered Wisconsin Consumer because of my popular post Which Wisconsin Grocery Store is the Cheapest? June 2026 Results Here!. Thanks for being here and wanting to find ways to save money on groceries! Since prices are fluctuating all the time, I thought I’d gather the data for August 2026.
I compiled lists of grocery prices for most of the Green Bay area grocery stores. It takes a bit of work, but instead of having to physically go to the grocery store, now it’s as easy as opening tabs on the computer. However, sometimes the online price is higher than instore prices, which I noticed at Aldi, Woodman’s and Costco. Some stores, like Aldi and Woodman’s may have different prices for some of their locations as well, so I’m providing a list of which stores I referenced:
- Aldi – Western Avenue, Green Bay
- Festival Foods – De Pere
- Hy-Vee – Ashwaubenon
- Meijer – Howard
- Metro Market – Lombardi Ave, Green Bay
- Target – Bellevue
- Walmart – West Green Bay
- Fresh Thyme – Ashwaubenon
- Woodmans – Green Bay/Howard
- Costco – Green Bay/Bellevue
- Sam’s Club – Green Bay
I also shopped the lowest REGULAR price possible for each item. Buying items when they are on sale is a no-brainer, but it’s the regular-priced items that are on your list that can jack the price up on your total. The items I priced included:
- White Bread
- Buns
- Gallon Whole Milk
- Almond Milk
- Dozen Eggs
- Greek Yogurt Tub
- Honeycrisp and Cosmic Crisp Apples
- Iceberg Lettuce
- Cucumber
- 80/20 Ground Beef/lb
- Fresh Chicken Breast/lb
- Frozen Chicken Breast/lb
- Chicken Drumsticks/lb
- Ground Coffee – 25.6oz
- Spaghetti Noodles
- 24oz Pasta Sauce
For certain items, such as yogurt and coffee, stores like Costco have larger sizes, so I divided items by price and size, then multiplied by the most common size for the item (ex. Coffee- 25.6oz ground coffee.)
All of these prices were obtained between August 28-29, 2026. The prices reflected are the Regular Store Prices, not their sale price. I also include a comparison of the same items priced in June compared to August. Despite most of these stores saying they were lowering prices, the data I collected tells another story.
Aldi still remains the number one spot for cheapest groceries in the state, followed by Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Woodman’s. Rounding out the bottom are Hy-vee, Fresh Thyme and Festival Foods, of all places. When I did this article years ago, Festival was always somewhere in the middle, which they were happy with. They stressed great customer service comes at a price. Now, they’re dead last and I wonder if it has to do with their new owners.
If I had shopped completely different items than the ones I did, would the stores end up in the same position? It’s hard to tell, but I think that most stores’ positions on the list would remain the same. Some stores, like Aldi and Costco, rarely have sales, while Festival Foods and Metro Market/Pick ‘n Save frequently offer sales frequently do.
Below you can see the costs for each item at each store. I highlighted the cheapest price for each item in gold and the highest price for each item in green. I also determined the average price for each item and included in the right-hand column so you can get a gauge on what current prices are for the items I chose.
What I’m trying to say is that sometimes, you may be better off shopping at more than one store. I learned long ago to not have store loyalty, and that’s something to consider. I’m also a big believer in doing store pickup at stores to avoid any impulse buys, which can crush a budget.
